Hi Dr. Sridhar Durbhakula, I wanted to let you know how well things are going with my double knee replacement. I really appreciated your faith in me to do both of my knees at the same time. You listened to my history and my commitment to rehab and we made a joint decision to move forward. I really felt that you were invested as much as I was in the success of the operation. Here we are a year and a half later, and I have two new knees. Within 4 months after the operation, I was back on the handball court running around like I hadn’t for years. Being 47 at the time of the operation, I wanted to live as actively as I had previously, and I am back to doing far more than I had been for the past 10 years with no pain. I do realize, Doc, that I will probably have to do them again in 15 years or so, but I am living my life the way I want and it’s worth it. See you in 15 years or so and you can work your magic again!

Dr. Sridhar Durbhakula (often called Dr. “D”) is a “miracle worker.” I visited with him circa 6-months before I had my total hip replacement. During that diagnosis interview, he advised that I would want to visit him again once my quality of life began to deteriorate. He was a prophet because my deteriorating joint condition because worst as the 6-months past. Being honest, I was reluctant to have the operation because of the unknown factor of pain, immobility, and limitations I would have during and after the operation. Well, the operation was scheduled as planned on 8 December 2010 at 10:00 AM. It was a total success. In fact, with the professional and capable staff at Shady Grove Adventist Orthopedic Center, they had me standing on the side of my bed the same afternoon of surgery at 5:00 PM. The most miraculous aspect of this feat was I had absolutely no pain then and literally no pain throughout my recovery.

I have gone through two weeks of home rehabilitation, three weeks of weekly out-patient rehabilitation therapy and have been walking free without the aid of a cane or walkers since week two after surgery. I have no limitations whatsoever and after enduring the experience 6-months after surgery I am the biggest cheer leader of Dr. Durbhakula and his staff. I play golf, speed-walk, lift light weights and am able to resume my athletic life I once could not engage during my ailing times before surgery. Thanks, Dr. “D!!”

New surgical technology helps patients return to an active lifestyle in no time Three months after a total right hip replacement at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, avid runner and outdoorsman Paul “Rusty” Neal embarked on a backpacking trip without any problems. “That’s the power of the Hana Table,” says orthopedic surgeon Sridhar Durbhakula, M.D.

  • Turning the Table for Hip Replacement Patient

At 67, like so many of us who plan to remain active throughout our lives, Betsy Feinberg wasn’t going to be sidelined when osteoarthritis began to slow her down. The condition is the result of cartilage padding wearing away completely from the end of the bones, leaving them to rub directly against each other, which causes decreased mobility and chronic pain. Feinberg tried everything to relieve the pain, including physical therapy and acupuncture. “I was walking around with a lot of hip pain,” said Feinberg, a former teacher. “The impact on my life was horrendous.”

It didn’t take long for Jim Nussbaum of Laytonsville to get back in the swing of things after hip replacement surgery at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Just 10 days, in fact. “I boldly stated I would play in an annual golf tournament with a group of my friends 10 days after surgery,” says Nussbaum, 59. “During the tournament, I was cautious, didn’t take my usual hard swing, but I was very happy with my day and my score.” Nussbaum credits Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, home to Montgomery County’s only Hana Table, which allows doctors to use a specialized front (anterior) approach to hip replacement surgery and hip fracture repairs.

  • I Am a Winner

“I have always been very active. But progressive, severe arthritis in my hips made it painful to walk. Less than eight months after both my hips were replaced, I am back to playing tennis. Slowing down was simply not an option for Carolyn Deeley, a former investment banker, mother of three daughters, and captain of her tennis team. But debilitating arthritis began to change the way she lived her life. An avid tennis player, she had to give up the game she loved. “It was very upsetting,” she recalled. Her physician, Dr. Sridhar Durbhakula, advised her of a new leading-edge tool available at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, the Hana Table. Shady Grove is the first hospital in Montgomery County to use this specialized surgical table, which allows complete anatomical control and access to natural intervals between muscles, requiring a smaller incision and more separating of tissue as opposed to cutting. The new minimally invasive tool is a breakthrough in total hip replacement surgery.
